The voice behind

Terry Clancy

Terry Clancy is an inspirational leader, author, and meditation teacher. He has been a spiritual guide for decades, starting as a clinical nurse, and now teaching his meditation steps to people around the world.

An Interesting Beginning

Living an interesting life, Terry was born in Darlinghurst, Sydney, 1953. He then grew up mostly in Brisbane.

Including playing AFL for Mt Gravatt Vultures, and winning two premierships with them, he then went on to study classical guitar.

As a student years in the 1960’s, Terry became concerned about the environment, inequality, and racism. He participated in anti Springbok and Vietnam Moratorium protest movements, and on the weekends was one of the avid hippies regularly visiting Nimbin communes.

The dream of alternative lifestyles ended with the need to earn a living, and, with his curiosity to better understand the human psyche, started  training in mental health nursing at Wolston Park Hospital where he graduated 1977.

Delving Into the Professional Years

Terry then started working as a registered nurse in medical, acute, adolescent, rehabilitation, and forensic psychiatry.

Appointed clinical nurse 1983, clinical nurse consultant in 1987, he held positions of Nursing Supervisor, Nursing Director/ Business Unit Manager of The Medium Secure Unit, The Extended Treatment and Rehabilitation Unit,  and The Dual Diagnosis Unit at The Park Centre for Mental Health until he retired in 2011.

As Nursing Director, Terry developed and implemented a model of mental health nursing rehabilitation and recovery that became the scope of practice of all nurses, and a framework of care planning that became the state wide plan for all patients in Queensland’s mental health services.

He had an unblemished career as a public servant for 36 years and was given 3 “send-offs” by different groups of staff as recognition of his service to them, patients, and the hospital as a change agent.

The facility developed as a center of excellence for treatment, rehabilitation, research, staff training and development. Terry still has a firm belief that psychiatric hospitals have an important role to play for patients with very complex problems.

An alternative way to Retire

After retirement, Terry worked for two years as a consultant on a Q-Health team developing community care units throughout Brisbane, the Sunshine Coast and West Moreton, and as a mental health consultant developing the Disability Forensic Care Unit at Wacol.

Upon his final retirement, Terry has become a tree changer, aiming to live sustainably, off grid and doing revegetation of the 96 acres of undeveloped land he bought at Gheerulla, South East Queensland,  and subdivided it into three blocks owned by himself, his two daughters and their partners.

He started writing about how the method of meditation developed as a method of healing based on the therapeutic use of self.
